What is thimble theater?

Thimble Theater is a popular comic strip that was created by E.C. Segar in 1919. The strip is about a family of entertainers, called the Oyl family, which includes Olive Oyl, her brother Castor Oyl, and their parents. The strip follows the family's adventures, usually involving Olive's boyfriend, a sailor named Popeye, who later becomes the main character of the strip.
